Laser Resurfacing Procedures Are Gaining Popularity

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

These days, facial rejuvenation and skin resurfacing has become a viable and realistic alternate treatment to a face lift. This is due in part to the advancements of technology for the use of lasers in a medical setting. Following this, the advanced Fraxel laser is one of the most widely used lasers in plastic surgeon offices around the world.

This is because the Fraxel Laser treats only a very small area of skin at a time and does not break the protective outer barrier of the skin. When one compares this to traditional resurfacing procedures that strip away the entire top layer of the damaged skin and have a lengthy recovery period, it is not hard to see why modern laser resurfacing procedures are gaining popularity among more invasive plastic surgery procedures.

Know Your Surgeon

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The most important step a person considering plastic surgery can take to make sure the surgeon he or she chooses is the training and experience. A good plastic surgeon should have operating and admitting privileges at a major hospital that is near the surgeons office. It is important to remember to be cautious of those surgeons who will only offer procedures performed in an office-based surgery center.

There are two very important reasons for this. Hospitals have already thoroughly researched a doctor’s qualifications and requires a strict set of qualifications and advanced training to allow a plastic surgeon to operate at the hospitals’ facilities. Thus, a surgeon who only operates in an office-based facility probably has less than adequate qualifications, training and experience to operate in a Major metropolitan Hospital. Secondly, anyone considering a plastic or cosmetic procedure should remember that cosmetic surgery is still surgery, and like any surgery, complications can happen.

A lack of hospital admitting privileges should be seriously considered when choosing your surgeon. One question you should ask yourself is: “If a serious complication occurs during or after my plastic surgery procedure, how will I be admitted to a hospital, and who is responsible for my care?” If the surgeon you choose does not have privileges at a nearby hospital, he or she will not be allowed to care for you in the hospital’s emergency room.

Breast Lift with Implants Lake Tahoe – If you’ve been toying with the Breast Lift with Implants Lake Tahoe notion of seeking out a plastic surgeon, you’ve probably already got a “problem area” or two in mind that you want addressed. Perhaps your breasts have lost their fullness and, thanks to gravity, time, children, or any number of factors and combinations thereof, have come to the conclusion that they would prefer a more southerly residence.

It’s possible that breast implants will serve the purpose you have in mind, but it’s also possible that they won’t. How much stretching has the skin gone through? What other tissues are in what condition? A breast lift may be the more effective course for you, or even a breast lift together with implants. A lot depends on your current physiology and future plans. Details like this are what makes the consultation with your surgeon so critical.

Dr. Kent Gabriel, a board certified plastic surgeon who also offers cosmetic surgery in Reno, describes his consultations as “lengthy and informative.” By taking “as much time as a patient needs to discuss their situation,” Dr. Gabriel says that whether or not a patient goes forward with their surgery with him, they will leave the consult with greater understanding.

Smoother Faced Thanks to Botox in San Diego, California

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Whose idea was it to squirt botulism into someone’s face to cure wrinkles? Botox San Diego Does it really sound that much stranger than using bread mold to fight infection? Naturally it’s not as simple as directly injecting canned yams gone bad.

Plastic surgeon Amir Karam of Carmel Valley Facial Plastic Surgery explains, “Botox® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria that decreases the activity of wrinkle-forming muscles.” The use of this protein started out as a treatment for face and neck muscle spasms. Like so many other discoveries, the protein’s usefulness in treating wrinkles was noticed as a side effect.

The botulinum protein works by inhibiting the receipt of neurotransmitters by nerve terminals for the wrinkling muscles. A Botox® injection technique using a few mere drops with a small needle is enough to be effective for several months.

A brow lift, also called a forehead lift or eyebrow lift, corrects the skin wrinkling and loss of tone that causes sagging of eyebrows and hooding of upper eyelids. A brow lift softens the deep creases across the forehead, reduces horizontal frown lines at the top of your nose and vertical lines between your brows. The result is a more relaxed and refreshed appearance. It is the only procedure that can increase the distance from the lateral brow to the upper eyelashes.

A brow lift is often performed along with a face lift or other facial rejuvenation procedures. Some people have brow lifts to correct aging problems, while others have inherited traits that cause them to seek treatment in their 20s or 30s. You may be a good candidate for a brow lift if you have any of the following types of conditions:

  • If you have drooping lateral brows that are close to or below your orbital bony rim
  • If you feel you always look angry or scowling
  • If you like your appearance and your brows and eyelids when you pull up your forehead with your fingers at your hairline above your lateral brows
  • If you desire the ideal benefits of facial rejuvenation and you are already considering a face and neck lift

For more information about the Brow Lift procedure, contact Dr. Pearl, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Mountain View, California.

Facial Paralysis Is A Treatable Condition

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

The facial muscles that control facial expression are subcutaneous, or just under the skin. These facial muscles (also called mimetic muscles) are innervated or ’supplied’ by the facial nerve. The loss of facial innervation often results in a partial loss of facial control, or facial paralysis (the inability to smile or move the face). This condition can be congenital, as some are born with this problem) or the result of a surgical procedure such as tumor removal, loss of innervation due to facial trauma, or as a result of a viral infections, such as Bells Palsy.

There are plastic surgeons that have a special interest in treating patients with this condition. Several possible treatment options exist. These options include nerve grafting techniques and micro-vascular muscle transfer procedures.

During a fat transfer procedure, a plastic surgeon will utilize fat tissues removed from another area of the body, and then used to fill out the area being treated. One advantage of fat transfer over other injectable fillers is that the area treated will generally not need re-treatment as the initial results are permanent in most cases.

The plastic surgery procedure itself is performed with a thin metal tube called a cannula. The cannula is inserted beneath the patient’s skin and it’s used to vacuum the fat away from certain irregular contours around one’s body.
